Chromium picolinate supplementation improves growth and resistance ability in the sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus .

  •

Abstract: Abstract Poor performances in growth and resistance ability greatly hamper the aquaculture of the sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus . Here, sea cucumbers were fed artificial diets with four concentrations of dietary Cr-Pic supplementation (0, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 mg/kg) for 56 days. The growth, digestive enzyme activities (LPS, AMS and pepsin), expression of growth-related genes ( MAPK-7 , FGFR-1 and c-myc ) and resistance ability (immune responses and antioxidant system) were subsequently assessed. The present study found that the SGR and BWG in 0.6 mg/kg group were significantly higher than those in control group. Significantly better activities of LPS and AMS and higher expressions of genes MAPK-7 and c-myc were consistently detected in 0.6 mg/kg group than those in control group, suggesting that dietary Cr-Pic supplementation greatly improves the food utilization and genes expression and consequently promotes the growth performances in sea cucumbers. Further, the activities of immune enzymes (AKP, ACP and LZM) and antioxidant enzymes (SOD and T-AOC) in 0.6 mg/kg group were significantly higher than those in control group, indicating that dietary Cr-Pic supplementation significantly enhances the resistance ability of sea cucumbers. The present study provides valuable information for improving the production efficiency of sea cucumbers A. japonicus .
